Overachiever

Okay maybe it is just me, but when they point out that the space between the crosses is consistent with a baby that is 7 weeks 5 days old and according to our calendar the baby should be 7 weeks 4 days old, I'm thinking this is an overachieving baby.  Kelli's intake of super-foods taking hold me thinks.

Week 7 Our little blueberry

The big news this week: Hands and feet are emerging from your baby's developing arms and legs – although they look more like paddles at this point than the tiny, pudgy extremities you're daydreaming about holding and tickling. Technically, your baby is still considered an embryo and has something of a small tail, which is an extension of the tailbone. The tail will disappear within a few weeks, but that's the only thing getting smaller. Your baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long, about the size of a blueberry. If you could see inside your womb, you'd spot eyelid folds partially covering your baby's peepers, which already have some color. You'd also see the tip of his or her nose and tiny veins beneath parchment-thin skin. Both hemispheres of your baby's brain are growing, and the liver is churning out red blood cells until bone marrow forms and takes over this role. Your baby also has an appendix and a pancreas, which will eventually produce the hormone insulin to aid in digestion. A loop in your baby's growing intestines is bulging into his or her umbilical cord, which now has distinct blood vessels to carry oxygen and nutrients to and from your baby's tiny body.

Heartbeat

Baby's first heartbeat, at least the first time we saw it....or should I say saw them all.  It was amazing!!  Seems like he/she is in more of a sprint than a marathon:  ~180 beats per minute.  To me that sounds like he/she is ready to play some singles tennis without any breaks or stoppage for water.  Now the question is one-handed backhand like daddy or two-handed backhand like mommy?  Let's just hope the serve is better than either.  From a non-tennis perspective, the baby is on track and is consistent to what is generally seen at 6 weeks, 4 days.  Only less than 34 weeks to go.  8D

Week 6 - size of a lentil

This week's major developments: The nose, mouth, and ears that you'll spend so much time kissing in eight months are beginning to take shape. If you could see into your uterus, you'd find an oversize head and dark spots where your baby's eyes and nostrils are starting to form. His or her emerging ears are marked by small depressions on the sides of the head, and the arms and legs by protruding buds. Your baby's heart is beating about 100 to 160 times a minute – almost twice as fast as yours – and blood is beginning to course through his or her body. The intestines are developing, and the bud of tissue that will give rise to the lungs has appeared. The pituitary gland is forming, as are the rest of your baby's brain, muscles, and bones. Right now, your baby is a quarter of an inch long, about the size of a lentil.

Is there a paramecium in the house?

So the visit with the doctor this past Monday (3/17/2014) produced mixed sentiments.  We seem to have a missing dancer.  There was no reason given, perhaps they are taking a break in the restroom or maybe they were pushed off the floor by a stronger, more determined tiny dancer.  Nonetheless, this little appleseed (last week a poppyseed) is proof positive that life as we know it has changed.  The doctor, sensing our disappointment on the missing dancer, was quick to espouse the more positive development and virtues of having a single baby to birth and we quietly and quickly settled into admiring the tiny dancer on the glossy paper this picture is taken from (a glossy paper that will soon be in a fireproof box sooner than later).  We're looking forward to seeing our dancer go from a .13 inch appleseed to a .25 inch sweet pea next week.

Scientific America

On day 1 (Feb 20th) the marathon dance party got started.  5 days later there were two ready to move to the beat while the others, their frozen faces gazing upon the chosen ones, wait to see what happens next.  These two look ready to dance the night away.
